Anything He Can Do, She Can Do Better: Children’s Attitudes About Gender and Occupations

Children’s career aspirations are affected by cultural stereotypes about gender. We investigated rudimentary implicit associations and explicit gender attitudes occupations with a diverse sample of fifty-eight (29 girls, 29 boys) 10-year-old children. tested using an adapted auditory Stroop task the Gender-Stereotyped Attitude Scale for Children (GASC). also modified version GASC to assess children’s female male firefighter-paramedic seen in brief video. judged firefighter-paramedics’ job skills. did not display between one’s based on differences response times congruent incongruent test trials that paired voices occupations, t(1762) = 0.65, p .52, d 0.03. Auditory voice stimuli might have confounded occupations. The findings highlighted stereotype flexibility men women. Girls were more flexible than boys component GASC, t(56) −2.12, .039, 0.55. level varied occupation. exhibited most who should be doctor least ballet dancer/teacher. Lastly, we assessed toward specific woman featured video; children overwhelmingly saw her as potentially good fire chief (vs. man 91% selected Kate or both would better chief).
